All I was doing was trying to get home from work.

Thank you, mama. Rest.

RIP August Wilson
10/04/2005

August Wilson captured the African-American experience heart, body and soul. He took the movement and the struggle and constructed beauty and balance and magic. He held a mirror to us and dared us not to feel beauty and challenged us into needing change. I remember reading his work in a
drama class in high school. I was in the 9th grade and barely understood where I belonged but I opened up and read the first few lines and knew where I needed to be. I fell in love with his characters and the life he
breathed into every single line and story and history. It was majestic and allowed me to lift and sway with everything I had to offer. It was then that I knew that I wanted to write like that and own an era and
imagination like that. I've never quite done that but I try and strive to every single day. I've held his work, shifted my hips with Ma Rainey, and cried the carvings of the Piano Lesson. My first acting role was playing the female lead, Rose, in a class production of Fences in high school. His writing lead me to live the character and own all her beauty and frustration. I will never forget that. I was never brave enough to go into acting but I did the next best thing. The stage, the world, the arts stand just a bit emptier without him. He was the voice. We are the echo. Let us all continue to create.

Take care of him, Ossie. Heaven's about to have one hell of an opening night.

in silence,
Bassey.
